{Waiting on Wednesday} Perception

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

This week’s pre-publication “can’t-wait-to-read” selection is:

Perception
by Kim Harrington
Expected publication: March 1st 2012 by Scholastic Point
When you can see things others can't, what do you do when someone's watching you?

Everybody knows about Clarity "Clare" Fern. She's the psychic girl in school, the one who can place her hands on something and see hidden visions from the past.

Only Clare would rather not be a celebrity. She prefers hanging back, observing. Her gift is not a game to her.

But then someone starts playing with her head . . . and heart. Messages and gifts from a secret admirer crop up everywhere Clare turns. Could they be from Gabriel, the gorgeous boy who gets Clare's pulse racing? Or from Justin, Clare's hopeful ex-boyfriend who'd do anything to win her back?

One thing is certain. Clare needs to solve this mystery, and soon. Because the messages are becoming sinister, and a girl in town has suddenly disappeared.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share  doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can  add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
My teaser this week is:

The Splendor Falls
by Rosemary Clement-Moore
"Because the thing that shook me up when Shawn mentioned ghosts wasn't the idea that the house was haunted. It was that, just for a second, I hoped it was. If I was grasping at the supernatural for a lifeline where my sanity was concerned, I was a lot farther gone than I had thought."

All Unquiet Things
by Anna Jarzab
"I had known none of those things, saw none of it coming. In retrospect, it was there, down in the dark, cavernous part of the heart where anything might lurk, but when I met Carly she was, for all intents and purposes, an entirely different person than she was on the night she died, and I blamed Adam and his crew for that."

Description from Goodreads

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -- the deliria -- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the government demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

My thoughts

Wow, wow, wow! I absolutely loved Lauren Oliver's writing in Before I Fall and Delirium just seals the deal that she has a true gift for writing. I have so many sticky notes sticking out of Delirium of passages that truly touched my heart and spoke to me.
"Maybe the house hears me, because, miraculously, I do make it to the front door. I pause for a second longer, listening for the sounds of footsteps upstairs, whispered voices, anything - but other than my heart, which is still going strong and loud, it's silent. Even the house seems to hesitate and take a breath, because the front door swings open with barely a whisper, and in the last second before I slip out into the night the rooms behind me are as dark and still as a grave." p.118
Lena is getting closer to the date when she is cured and she can hardly wait. She plans to spend the last summer before she is cured with her best friend Hana but when Hana starts doing irresponsible things like listening to unapproved music and going to parties with boys, Lena questions her friendship and what she really know about her.
"...and meanwhile, behind my back, she's been turning into someone I don't know - someone with secrets and weird habits and opinions about things we're not supposed to even think about." p. 106
And then Lena meets Alex...and her whole world and what she thought she knew is upended. And as she falls under the deliria of love, she learns the truth about her past and the truth about the society.
"Love: a single word, a wispy thing, a word no bigger or longer than an edge. That's what it is: an edge; a razor. It draws up through the center of your life, cutting everything in tow. Before and after. The rest of the world falls away on either side.
Before and after - and during, a moment no bigger or longer than an edge." p. 301
I loved everything about this book! I loved how Lena grew and became the "legend" and how her relationships with Hana and Alex ebbed and flowed and of course I loved the setting, Portland and envisioning all the landmarks in the future.  With tears in my eyes as I read the last page, I closed the book anticipating Pandemonium even more!
